In simple terms, an algorithm is a bit like a recipe with a sequence of instructions for your computer to follow and carry out tasks.<\/p><p>Social networking site Facebook uses algorithms for many reasons, including:<\/p><ul><li>Selecting which posts will show up on your news feed.<\/li><li>Recommending contacts that you may be interested in.<\/li><li>Suggesting pages based on your likes.<\/li><li>Detecting harmful links that may be spam or viruses.<\/li><li>Showing you adverts that are relevant to your interests.<\/li><\/ul><h3><strong>\u00a0<span id=\"anonymity\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Anonymity<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>This is a feature that some apps allow. People may make an account posing as anybody they want or use an anonymous messaging app to send comments to other users without ever knowing who they really are or where they came from. Some apps are also designed so that you can\u2019t reply to the messages.<\/p><p>What are the risks?<\/p><p>Being anonymous makes it easier to be unkind to others. It enables some people to pretend to be someone else; this is known as <em>catfishing<\/em>. Before joining a service that allows anonymity, be sure you know how to report and block users who could potentially be unkind or harmful.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"applications-apps\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Applications \u2013 \u2018Apps\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>An application is more commonly referred to as an app. These can be any type of computer program.<\/p><p>Apps are usually downloaded onto smartphones or tablets. You can usually access an app by clicking on the small icon\/image on the smartphone or tablet device. Some apps are free and usually already on devices such as the calendar or calculator apps. Others must be purchased and downloaded. Many companies have their services available in app form to make it easier for customers to access, such as online banking apps and online shopping apps.<\/p><p>Many young people use chat and social media service such as WhatsApp, WECHAT, Instagram and Facebook through apps on their smartphones.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"blocking\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Blocking<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>Apps and websites that involve interaction with other people, including online gaming platforms and social media sites, allow you to stop other people from communicating with you and stop them from seeing your posts and information. This is called blocking.<\/p><p>The ability to block people can help keep you safer and more comfortable when exploring the online world.<\/p><p>Here are some reasons you may decide to block someone online:<\/p><ul><li>You are being cyberbullied or trolled online.<\/li><li>You receive spam messages from fake accounts and <em>bots <\/em>(computer-generated messages).<\/li><li>Someone is being unkind to you in an online gaming platform.<\/li><li>You receive inappropriate messages from someone you don\u2019t know.<\/li><\/ul><p>You need to check individual websites for instructions on how to block someone and what they can and can\u2019t see once they\u2019re blocked. \u00a0You may worry that the person you block will get a notification telling them that they have been blocked. Don\u2019t worry, this doesn\u2019t usually happen. It is usually written in an informal or conversational style.<\/p><p>Anyone can set up their own blog and it is quite simple to do. It can be a fun way of writing about your interests or hobbies. Some people set up blogs to support other people who may be going through the same problems as them. This is called peer-to-peer support.<\/p><p>Be aware that not all blogs are reliable. Some people may express their opinions, without evidence to back up their views. Some blogs may contain extreme, disturbing or harmful opinions and images. Read up on fake news to see how to spot reliable information.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"browser\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Browser<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>A web browser is a software application for accessing information on the World Wide Web.<\/p><p>Some of the most popular browsers are Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Microsoft Edge (replacing Internet Explorer as the default web browser). You can open a browser to search for web pages, images, videos and other information resources online.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"\u0441atfishing\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Catfishing<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>In the digital world, a\u00a0<em>catfish<\/em>\u00a0is someone who pretends to be someone that they\u2019re not.<\/p><p>For example, it is easy to set up a fake social media profile, make up a name, upload a photo of someone else and pretend to be them. Sometimes people use this so that they can spread hateful and harmful messages online whilst staying anonymous.<\/p><p>If someone you don\u2019t know tries to add you as a friend online, or sends messages, be wary that the name and photo they are using may not really be their real one.<\/p><p>Sometimes a\u00a0<em>catfish<\/em>\u00a0will try to trick others by uploading what they consider to be attractive photos to get people to accept their friend request.<\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\"><span id=\"\u0441yberbullying\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Cyberbullying<\/span><\/span><\/h3><p>Cyberbullying is online bullying. If someone is repeatedly unkind or harasses another person online, then they are a\u00a0<em>cyberbully<\/em>.<\/p><p>Cyberbullying is slightly different to online trolling, although the two words are often, and can be, used interchangeably.<\/p><p>Cyberbullying usually involves people you know. It is often accompanied by traditional, offline, bullying.<\/p><p>Whereas trolling can include comments and messages to people you have never met, to provoke them or start an argument.<\/p><p>Top tips to remember:<\/p><ul><li>Always report cyberbullying to a trusted adult, even if it isn\u2019t happening to you. Report it on behalf of a friend who may be too scared or upset.<\/li><li>Ask an adult to help you block and report the cyberbully online.<\/li><li>Never respond to a cyberbully with messages. It can shape your online reputation.<\/p><p>Your digital footprint includes all the content you create, post and share; as well as any content that others post, and share, with you and about you. To have a positive digital footprint it is important to think carefully about what you are sharing, liking and posting online.<\/p><p>Make sure you are not leaving behind anything negative that may affect your online reputation. You could practise changing your privacy settings so that all your information is protected and that you know what people can see, if they were to search for you online.<\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6d17c2a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6d17c2a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c2a9839\" data-id=\"c2a9839\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c2daa83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c2daa83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong><span id=\"digital-resilience\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Digital resilience<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>The UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) Resilience Working Group\u2019s definition of digital resilience is:<\/p><p>\u2018\u2026the ability to understand when you are at risk online, knowing what to do if anything goes wrong, learning from your experiences of being online, and being able to recover from any difficulties or upsets.\u2019<\/p><p>A person who is digitally resilient will be able to:<\/p><ul><li>Understand when they are at risk online.<\/li><li>Know what to do to seek help.<\/li><li>Learn from their experiences.<\/li><li>Recover when things go wrong.<\/li><\/ul><h3><strong>\u00a0<span id=\"encryption\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Encryption<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>Encryption is the process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorised access.\u00a0End-to-end\u00a0encrypted messages can only be read by the sender and the receiver. This can be both good and bad.<\/p><p>The good thing is that when a message is encrypted it is more secure and private. This is useful for important and sensitive information.<\/p><p>The bad thing is that some people may take advantage of this and use the end-to-end encryption to spread harmful information that cannot be moderated and tracked.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"exploitation\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Exploitation<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>There are people online who may take advantage of vulnerable people and exploit them to get something from them that they want. If this happens to a young person, it can make them feel upset and ashamed. They may feel like they are to blame, even though it isn\u2019t their fault.<\/p><p>It is important to let a trusted adult know if anything happens online that makes you feel ashamed. Even if it is not easy to say, you need to find someone you trust who can help you report it and recover from it.<\/p><h3><strong><span id=\"facebook\" class=\"sta-anchor \" aria-hidden=\"true\">Facebook<\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p>Facebook is the biggest social media network in the world with over two billion users across the globe.<\/p><p>On Facebook you can:<\/p><ul><li>Make a profile.<\/li><li>Upload photos.<\/li><li>Update your status.<\/li><li>Add friends.<\/li><li>Join groups.<\/li><li>\u2018Like\u2019 photos and statuses.<\/li><li>Live stream using Facebook Live.<\/li><\/ul><p>Facebook aims to have as many users as possible and the easiest way of achieving this is by ensuring that they provide people with a free service.<\/p><p>Facebook makes money by selling advertisers your information. This includes details about your Facebook \u2018likes\u2019, interests and any links that you click on. There are different types of fake news.<\/p><p>Some fake news is deliberately made up stories or images with the aim of making people believe something that isn\u2019t true.<\/p><p>Others have some truth to them, but may be misleading, including some false information that hasn\u2019t been checked properly or with facts that have been exaggerated by the author.<\/p><p>Spotting whether something is fake news is not always easy. With so much information produced online, and the speed that information is posted and spread, even reputable news sites have been caught out accidentally sharing unreliable stories. Of course, they take them down from their websites or social media accounts as soon as they realise, but this is usually after the stories have already been seen and shared across the world.<\/p><p>Although it is not always certain, there are some ways to help you work out what is most likely to be reliable online and what may not be:<\/p><ul><li>Has the story been repeated elsewhere? Check other reputable sites.<\/li><li>Does the image look believable? Is it used elsewhere? For example, an edited photo of a pink giraffe flying across the moon is a big clue that the story isn\u2019t real!<\/li><li>Does the web address (URL) look strange? Or is it from a trusted site?<\/li><li>Do you know who the author is? Have you heard of the organisation reporting it?<\/li><li>Are you familiar with the organisation or company? They sometimes act anonymously or use a fake identity.<\/p><p>If you come across a troll online, it is best not to engage with them, as this is just what they want. If they are saying something offensive and upsetting, you should block and report them. You should also tell a trusted adult, so they can support you.<\/p><p>If you receive a nasty message online, it is ok to feel upset and angry.
